Richard Mayne was educated at St. Paul's School, London and at Trinity College, Cambridge where he got both his MA and PhD. From 1953-54 he was appointed correspondent with the New Statesman, Rome. In 1956 he worked as official for the ECSC and in 1958 he worked as official for the EEC in Brussels. From1963 to 1966 he was personal assistant to Jean Monnet and Director of the Documentation Centre, Action Committee for the United States of Europe. From 1971-1973 he was Director of Federal Trust and from 1973-1979 he held the position as Head of UK Representation, Offices of the European Communities, London.
