After serving an apprenticeship as a fitter with the Munich firm Krauss-Maffei, Ernst G. Högenauer studied mechanical engineering in Graz and Munich and graduated Dipl. Ing. from the Technical University of Munich. His outstanding career in the aerospace business began in 1961 when he became a development engineer at the Junkers Aircraft and Engine Works where from 1963 to 1965 he served as assistant to the technical director. He moved to MBB in 1969 and between 1966 and 1975 headed a number of national and international aerospace projects, including the sounding rocket projects Javelin, Black Brant and Nike Apache, a series of satellite experiments including the Gamma Ray Telescope (Funkenkammer), the Franco-German satellite programme Dial MIKA, Symphonie and the ESA projects HEOS-A1, Cos-B, Meteosat and Spacelab. After managing Dornier’s Franco-German Alpha-Jet production programme from 1975-1978, he moved back to MBB and became responsible from 1978-1983 for the production lines at the Donauwörth, Laupheim und Speyer facilities. From 1984 to 1990 he served as deputy managing director of the MBB Space System Groups, as managing director of ERNO GmbH and as head of the supervisory board of the Eurosatellite company. In 1985 he became head of the space communication and propulsion systems division of MBB, where he was not only responsible for a series of satellite programmes including TV-SAT I and II and TDF 1 and 2 but also for hypersonic transportation systems, Hermes, Sänger and the Mach 7.3 Ramjet development engine. After three years as president of Bayern-Chemie, an MBB subsidiary, he retired in 1993. Since 1994 he has been active in international industry consulting. His awards and honours include the CNES medal (1967), the Federal Cross of Merit on a Ribbon (1994), the Eugen Sänger Medal (1994) and the Wernher von Braun Medal (2000).
