Alan Dukes was educated at Colaiste Mhuire and University College Dublin. He worked as economist for the Irish Farmers Association in Dublin from 1969-73 and in Brussels from 1973-77. From 1977 to 1980 he was a member of Commissioner Richard Burke’s Cabinet. Elected Fine Gael’s Dial representative in 1981. From 1982 to 1986 he was Minister for Finance, from 1986 to 1987 he was Minister for Justice. From 1987 to 1989 he was Fine Gael’s party leader.
