Lord Arthur Cockfield was educated at the London School of Economics and was called to the bar, Inner Temple 1942. From 1945 to 1952 he worked for the Home Civil service, Inland Revenue. From 1953 to 1967 we worked as financial Director, Managing Direcctor and Chairman of Boots Pure Drug Co Ltd. In 1973 he was appointed Chairman of the Price Commission, in 1978 he was created Baron Cockfield and from 1979-1982 he held the post of Minister of State at the Treasury. In 1982 he held the position of Secretary of State for Trade. On leaving that post he became Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster until 1984. From 1985-1988 he was appointed Commissioner for Internal Market Tax Law and Customs, Commission of European Communities, Vice-President of European Commission.
