Graduated from Paris University in Physics and Astronomy, I961; Doctor in Physics of Paris University (Sorbonne), 1968; Director of Laboratoire de Physique Stellaire et Planétaire of CNRS, 1969-1983; Chairman of ESA’s Science Advisory Committee (SAC), 1977-1979; Director of ESA Science Programme, 1983-2001. In these duties, he established the first long term programme 'Horizon 2000'. He was also entrusted with defining the European strategy for Earth Sciences and Observation, now called the 'Living Planet' programme. Between 2001 and 2006, he served as an advisor on the 'Aurora' programme of planetary exploration; Joint Director General of CNES for Science, 2002-2003. In these functions, he chaired a Commission on the future of the French space policy. The Commission’s report led to a major reorganisation of the CNES; Executive Director of the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) in Bern (Switzerland), January 2003-; President of COSPAR (Committee for Space Research), October 2002-; Professor at the University of Liège, Belgium, November 2002-. Prof. Bonnet is the author of more than 150 articles and scientific publications and a number of books including “Les Horizons Chimériques” (1992), “International Cooperation in Space” together with V. Manno (1994) and “Surviving 1000 Centuries. Can we do it? together with L. Woltjer (2008).
