In 1952, Albert Kesselring, the German commander-in-chief in Italy, was released due to his declining health. Upon his return home, he was warmly welcomed by neo-Nazi circles in Bavaria, as he was an active supporter of their cause for the next eight years. Kesselring publicly declared that he had nothing to regret about his actions during the 18 months of the occupation of Italy and even suggested that the Italians should be grateful to him and should erect a monument in his honor. In response, Piero Calamandrei, on the eighth anniversary of the sacrifice of Duccio Galimberti, engraved a famous epigraph as a sign of protest against Kesselring's release. The epigraph was placed on a plaque at the Town Hall of Cuneo and served as a permanent reminder of the outrage caused by Kesselring's liberation.
