Horst Rauck studied Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the Technical University Darmstadt, graduating from there in 1966. In the same year, he joined the newly founded space division of MAN-Turbo, a wholly-owned subsidiary of MAN AG. In 1969, space activities were moved to a newly-created “Neue Technologie” division of MAN in which he became head of energy and space technology. After restructuring in 1986, this division became a wholly-owned subsidiary of MAN called MAN Technologie AG, within which he served as a member of the Executive Board, and then chair as of 1996. In 2002 he moved to the Supervisory Board of MAN Technologie where he stayed until the company was sold to OHB/Apollo Capital Partners in 2005. His duties at MAN included the development and early production of the gas centrifuge for uranium enrichment, renewable energy systems and the Ariane launcher family, which brought him into close contact with French industry. From 1987 to 2003 he also sat on the Arianespace board.
Since 1987 he has been a member of the German Aerospace Industries Association (BDLI) space forum and served as chair of the BDLI Beirat (advisory board) from 1990 to 2003. Rauck was also a Vice-Chair of the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) Senate and today heads the Association of Friends of the DLR. He also chairs the DLR programme committee. From 1991 to 2003, he acted as co-chair of the German-Russian council of cooperation in aerospace. He is a full member of the International Academy of Astronautics and has served as Chair of its “Future, Systems and Technology” Commission. He recently became a full member of France’s Académie de l’Air et de l’Espace.
His awards include the Orders of Merit of the German Federal Republic (2000), of the Russian Cosmonautic Administration (RKA) (2001) and of the Légion d’Honneur of the French Republic (2006).
