After obtaining his Abitur school leaving certificate in Kassel in 1940, Prof. Dr. Reimar Lüst served with the German navy in a U-boat, followed by three years as a prisoner of war in England and the US. In 1946 he began studying physics in Frankfurt and in 1949 moved to the University of Göttingen, where, in 1951, he received his Ph.D. and, in the same year, joined the Max Planck Institute for Physics. Between 1955 and 1962 he held prestigious fellowships and Visiting Professorships at Chicago, Princeton, MIT and Caltech. From 1963 to 1972 he served as Director of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Munich and from 1972 to 1984 as President of the Max Planck Society. From 1969 to 1972 he was Chairman of the German Science Council, from 1989 to 1999 acting President of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and from 1999 to 2004 he headed the Board of Governors of the International University Bremen. His numerous honours and awards include the Legion of Honour of the French Republic. At ESRO, he served as its first Scientific Director from 1962 to 1964 and as its Vice-President from 1968 to 1970. In 1983 he was elected Director General of ESA, a position he held from 1984 to 1990.
