Under the terms of the Public Records Acts 1958 and 1967 documents are transferred after 30 years to The National Archives and opened to the public.

This series consists of registered files of the Research Department of the joint Foreign Office/Commonwealth Office Research Department and its successor in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office after October 1968. The files relate to general research and political intelligence duties. The Department collated information into the format required by the client departments, and as such its files often contain useful historical summaries relating to particular events or locations.
