Administrative and Biographical History

The Economic Committee was established by a Council Resolution of 9th June 1950, amending the title and competence of the Programme Committee. This Committee consisted of representatives of the Governments of member and associated countries. In March 1959, the Council decided to invite the International Monetary Fund to send an observer to meetings of the Economic Committee and its Working Parties. The competences of the Economic Committee included: screening and co-ordination of annual programmes, examination of problems relating to international investments, study of internal financial stability in member countries, comparison of financial, economic, social, tariff and investment policies of member countries, with the object of achieving such measure of harmonisation as may appear necessary to arrive at closer economic and monetary associations between them.;Activities included: the preparation of the annual report of the OEEC, examination of the annual reports of the vertical technical committees and formulation of suggestions and comments on these reports - this task was assigned to Working Party No. 12 of the Committee, periodical examination of the economic and financial situations in member and associated countries - this task was assigned to Working Party No. 13 .
