The mandate of the Steering Group on Enlargement which involved keeping under review the situation regarding applications by other European countries for membership of the Union, to guide the interservice work to be made under the charge of the Director General for External Relations, with the collaboration of other services, concerning in particular: (1) the assessment of the situation and prospects of the potential new member countries (2) the implications for the development of the Community. To prepare for the College the documents and discussions necessary for the execution of the mandate given to the Commission by the Maastricht European Council.
